WAPOR Webinar: RAGs and LLMs: Turning AI into Real Intelligence for Public Opinion Research On April 23, 2025 at 16:00 UTC, for our webinar on “RAGs and LLMs: Turning AI into Real Intelligence for Public Opinion Research” WAPOR was joined by Matin Mirramezani, from Stanford University and Mosh Borouchov, from Cornell University. This webinar explores how Large Language Models (LLMs) and Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) Models are transforming public opinion research. As the research landscape evolves with AI integration, this session aims to provide both practical insights and a new perspective on navigating this technological shift. The session opens with an examination of how new technologies can enhance conventional survey research, spanning the whole research process. We then discuss the significant challenges posed by the proliferation of LLMs to established research practices, including circumventing fraud detection, AI-assisted responses, and developing appropriate quality standards. Moving beyond surveys, the webinar investigates emerging opportunities where LLMs and RAG models offer unique advantages in analyzing other information sources and data collection methods. We’ll discuss how these new technologies will help researchers sort, index, and query large behavioral datasets, while comparing the strengths and limitations of these methods. Participants will gain practical understanding of both the transformative potential and methodological considerations necessary for integrating new technologies responsibly into public opinion research. This webinar is valuable for researchers, methodologists, and practitioners seeking to navigate the evolving intersection of artificial intelligence and opinion research with both innovation and rigor.
