The late Lieutenant Colonel, Office Chisozu has become the first veteran of the liberation struggle to be buried at Kamenga Shrine in Singalamwe. He was conferred a military funeral by President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah. Mourners gathered over the weekend to bid farewell to the 90-year-old freedom fighter, described as fearless and devoted to Namibia's independence. Speaking on behalf of the Swapo Party, Secretary General Sophia Shaningwa and veteran of the liberation struggle Alufea Sampofu hailed Chisozu as a selfless hero who joined the struggle when it demanded immense courage. “Comrade Sikanya did not die; he multiplied into a million sons and daughters who are committed to defend what we fought for. His blood will therefore nourish the tree of liberty, whose fruits we continue to enjoy today. Comrade Sikanya fought the good fight, he finished the race, and he kept the faith.” Kavango East Governor Hambyuka Hamunyera served as the chief mourner on behalf of the President. “Let us honour the memories of Comrade Chisozu by rededicating ourselves to the ideal he and others fought for: unity of purpose, peace, stability and justice. At this hour of grief, I have turned, on behalf of the people and the government of the Republic of Namibia and indeed, on my own behalf, heartfelt condolences to the widow, the children and the entire bereaved family. Comrades and friends, may the soul of comrade Chisozu rest in eternal peace.” Chisozu left Namibia in 1968, through Imusho – now Kamenga – to join the liberation struggle. He trained in Russia as an infantry specialist and served at various PLAN bases, including Kaunga Mashi, Kwanza-Sul and Nyango, where he worked as a logistician. After Independence, he joined the Development Brigade Corporation at Omega, Nukwa, and Grootfontein until his retirement in 1994. He was awarded the honorary rank of Lieutenant Colonel and awarded the Commendation Medal and Liberation Medal Certificate by former President Hifikepunye Pohamba in 2007. Chisozu is survived by his wife, five children, 11 grandchildren, and 17 great-grandchildren. #NBCNews #nbcdigitalnews #nbcDSTV282 #nbcGOtv20 #nbcPlusApp
