What is rail travel outside the UK and USA like? In this video, I ride suburban trains around Annaba, Algeria, including the Sidi Amar line operated by push–pull trains, showing everyday railway (UK) / railroad (US) operations in eastern Algeria. This video is for UK and US rail enthusiasts, overseas train travellers, and anyone curious about railways and railroads beyond their home country. Sunday 8th February 2026 marks Day 8 of my journey through Algeria and Tunisia, combining further suburban rail exploration with time spent around the city of Annaba. The day includes travel on the Sidi Amar line, operated using push–pull train formations, offering a different style of operation compared with other suburban services in the region. I also return to Chihani Bachir, travelling again on local passenger trains serving the area east of Annaba. The push–pull services on the Sidi Amar line were hauled by 040-DJ-13, a GM GL18B diesel shunter, offering an interesting example of suburban push–pull operation. The local passenger service to Chihani Bachir was hauled by 040-DH-08, another GM GL18B diesel shunter, providing contrast with the push–pull working. Later in the day, I caught a longer-distance train to El Hadjar, which continues to Tebessa departing Annaba at 16:30, operated by 060-DS-10, one of the newer GM GT36HCW diesel locomotives used on passenger services. Alongside the rail journeys, the video features city views of Annaba and further exploration of Annaba railway station, including platforms, station facilities, and general railway activity. The video captures a mix of urban scenes, suburban passenger operations, push–pull working, and both modern and traditional diesel traction, offering a detailed look at everyday rail travel in Algeria and comparisons with railways/railroads in Europe and North America.
