After one week traversing the Karoo I must leave this harsh land and drive to the North, across the Free State. My next destination is in the Limpopo province, near the border with Botswana. Marakele National Park is a place of contrasts—towering mountains, deep valleys, and vast open plains where some of Africa’s most iconic wildlife still roam freely. On this solo overland journey, I explored its rugged terrain and had an unforgettable encounter with a large number of white rhinos. Seeing these incredible animals up close, completely undisturbed in their natural habitat, was a rare experience. The drive through the park was just as thrilling, with winding dirt roads leading through dense bush and dramatic cliffs offering panoramic views over the reserve. One moment, you're deep in the valley surrounded by thick acacia trees, and the next, you're looking out over endless wilderness from a high mountain pass. Marakele’s beauty lies in its wild, unpredictable nature.
