N.E.R.D or N*E*R*D is an American rock, funk, and hip-hop band. Pharrell Williams and Chad Hugo were signed by Teddy Riley to Virgin Records as a duo: The Neptunes. After producing songs for various artists over the years, the duo formed the band with Shay Haley. N.E.R.D's debut album, In Search of..., sold 603,000 copies in the United States. N.E.R.D.'s second album, Fly or Die, sold 412,000 copies. In 2005, N.E.R.D terminated their contract with Virgin. Three years later, the band had a reunion with a contract under Star Trak Entertainment. The band's third album, Seeing Sounds, sold 80,000 copies in the United States in its first week. The band's name is an acronym for No One Ever Really Dies, as Pharrell Williams states on his website: "What does N.E.R.D stand for? N.E.R.D stands for No One Ever Really Dies. The Neptunes are who we are and N.E.R.D is what we do. It's our life. N.E.R.D is just a basic belief, man. People's energies are made of their souls.
