Fire is not the first thing that comes to mind when one thinks of New England forests. However, in certain habitats it plays - or once played - a crucial role in the succession of species. A particularly active fires season in the fall of 2024 turned many people's attention to fire regimes in New England. While we do not suffer the devastating infernos seen with increasing frequency on the west coast, a rapidly changing climate and centuries of poor - or total lack of - forest management have caused New England communities to face the increasing threat of wildfire and to become more accustomed with its history and function in the region.
