What weather phenomenon causes more widespread damage than a single tornado and is derived from a Spanish word meaning "straight ahead"? Derecho. And it's our weather word of the week. I'm Storm Shield Meteorologist Jason Meyers, and a derecho is a widespread, fast-moving windstorm with winds 58 mph or stronger and leaving a swath of wind damage more than 240 miles. These storms are mesoscale convective systems, which is a fancy way of saying they're really big thunderstorms that span across multiple states, taking on the shape of a bow echo. They typically form during warmer months - from April to August, and they're most common in the Plains and the Midwest. The term "derecho" has been around since the late 1880's, and it wasn't widely accepted at first. It took nearly 100 years - in the mid 1980's - for severe weather meteorologists to begin using the term again. Is there a weather word you used once and then waited 100 years before bringing it back? Tell me about it in the comments below, tweet me, or send me a message on the Storm Shield Facebook page. This, however, is going to be our final weekly weather word since we're retiring the weekly aspect of it. But if anyone suggests a great weather word in the meantime, we'll gladly bring it back on a limited basis. Thanks for watching.
