Law 3 of Robert Greene's The 48 Laws of Power is: Conceal Your Intentions.[1] What it means in simple terms: This law means that you should not always tell people exactly what you are planning to do or what your ultimate goal is.[1] If people know your secret plans, they might try to stop you, get in your way, or prepare a defense.[1] Instead, you should keep your true goals to yourself, or even pretend to be interested in something else entirely to throw them off the trail.[1] Think of it like being a magician: A magician never tells the audience how the trick works or what is going to happen next, because that would ruin the magic and the surprise. Here are three present-day examples of how this works, explained simply for children: 1. Planning a Surprise Imagine you are planning a spectacular surprise birthday party for your mom. If you walk around whispering about a "party" or asking her what her favorite cake is, she will guess your intentions and the surprise will be ruined. To conceal your intentions, you might complain that you have a ton of homework and lock yourself in your room. Your mom will think you are just studying (this is your "smoke screen"), but really, you are secretly wrapping her presents and making her a card. Because you hid your true goal, the surprise works perfectly. 2. Playing Hide and Seek You are playing a game of Hide and Seek with your friends. You have spotted the absolute best hiding spot in the house: the hall closet. However, the "seeker" is watching you before they cover their eyes. If you stare directly at the hall closet, they will know exactly where you are going. Instead, you look at the stairs and take a loud step upward to make them think you are going to the second floor. As soon as they cover their eyes, you quietly sneak into the hall closet. You concealed your true path, so they won't know where to look. 3. Trading Pokémon or Sports Cards Imagine you are trading cards with a classmate, and they have the exact rare shiny card you have been searching for all month. If you jump up and down and say, "I need that card! It's my favorite! I'll give you anything for it!", your classmate will know exactly how much you want it. They might decide to keep it, or they might ask you to trade five of your best cards just to get it. Instead, you conceal your intentions by acting like you only kind of like it. You talk a lot more about a different, less important card. Because your friend doesn't realize the shiny card is your true target, they will happily trade it to you for a fair and simple swap.
