Design Beyond Borders // We consider Design as an integrative process based on research and creativity — whether you call it Advertising, Branding, Colour, Digital, Graphic, Interior, Lighting, Metal or Product. Our curriculum combines all of these areas of design expertise, with a wide range of individuals building successful teams for the job. Studying at the Faculty of Design Bachelor of Arts Design: The basic studies in our Bachelor of Arts program are comprehensive. This means that students work in both two-dimensional and three-dimensional as well as four-dimensional ways. You will be familiarized with a wide variety of materials and techniques and develop your skills in the disciplines of drawing, composition and colour design. You will learn different design techniques and the corresponding theory and acquire the technical know-how and skills you need in the workshop courses. Only after you have acquired this foundation of know-ledge and skills is it possible for you to specialize in one of the nine fields of competence. Since we attach particular importance to practical relevance, work on concrete projects is at the center of our studies in the higher semesters. In some cases, this involves working together with agencies and companies both nationally and internationally, but student projects and new ideas are also supported. Those projects conceive and produce designs that relate to society and actual market needs. Interested students are given the opportunity to complete an internship or a semester abroad. International excursions are also offered. After six semesters, graduates can successfully start their professional careers as freelancers or employed by a company. Or they can extend their qualifications by continuing their studies with the Master of Arts degree at the HAWK. Master of Arts Design: In the Master’s program at the Faculty of Design, the focus is therefore on strategic thinking, integrative design, team-oriented leadership and design oriented research. Strategic thinking teaches the targeted use of design methods and working methods. Integrative design means formulating questions and developing solutions in a networked manner – and thereby deepening and expanding one’s own design skills. It is experimental, varied, critical and reflective. Team oriented leadership means working respectfully with others, guiding them and leading groups safely. Design oriented research means generating new knowledge through design, consolidating designs argumentatively, as well as focusing on people in responsible relation to the designed world. To wrap it up: The complementary fields of competence Advertising Design, Branding Design, Digital Environments, Colour Design, Graphic Design, Interior Design, Lighting Design, Metal Design and Product Design of the Faculty of Design provide the more than 800 students with a comprehensive understanding of related fields. Interdisciplinary project work and joint courses allow individual focuses. Our laboratories, workshops and seminar rooms are well equipped and enable students to study in a modern environment. We attach particular importance to the individual support of our students: They receive intensive support from teachers and staff.
