Exploring the root of the subject, Philip Gorski delves into the history of our modern understanding of autonomy by looking at the formation of social theory in authors such as Thomas Hobbes and John Locke. Following, Timothy Rutzou takes up the modern project of autonomy by looking at the Critical Theory tradition, namely Michel Foucault, before turning to critical realism and the manner in which it addresses these problems.
