Autonomy is an important philosophical concept which is not often discussed in the context of social science. Yet, autonomy lies at the very heart of modernity and informs much of social science at a theoretical, ethical, and political level. Questions about autonomy, as well as social solidarity, human dependency, and interdependency serve as the bridge between empirical research, social theory, ethics, and politics in social science. How then should we understand autonomy, and what place does it serve in our projects? Exploring the root of the subject, Philip Gorski delves into the history of our modern understanding of autonomy by looking at the formation of social theory in authors such as Thomas Hobbes and John Locke. Following, Timothy Rutzou takes up the modern project of autonomy by looking at the Critical Theory tradition, namely Michel Foucault, before turning to critical realism and the manner in which it addresses these problems. Question time becomes an extended discussion about human nature, another and often neglected term haunting social science.
