Santee Delta

The Santee River is the largest river in SC, the second largest on the US east coast. It is also the oldest river east of the Mississippi. Before reaching the ocean, the Santee splits into 2 rivers, North and South Santee. The North Santee then splits off into N Santee River and N Santee Bay, before reaching the ocean. Before the construction of the Santee-Cooper lake system in the 1940's, this river roared unimpeded from the mountains to the ocean. Sadly, it is now a ghost of its former self, with less than 10% of the previous flow. The other 90% is sent through the Cooper River and into Charleston Harbor.
