Both remain in use to this day. The Original Anthem (1952) The first official anthem, simply titled "¡Hala Madrid!" (meaning "Forward Madrid!"), was commissioned in 1952 by the then-club president Santiago Bernabéu. Creation: The score was famously scribbled on a restaurant napkin by singer José de Aguilar after he composed the tune on a train journey from Aranjuez to Madrid. Recording: It was recorded in the Columbia Records studios with the National Orchestra of Spain, under the supervision of Bernabéu himself. Lyrics: The lyrics speak of the team's "clean, white flag that doesn't tarnish" and describe the players as "noble and warlike champions, knights of honour". The Modern Anthem (2014) The current, widely recognized anthem, "¡Hala Madrid! ...y nada más" (meaning "Hala Madrid! ...and nothing else"), was released in 2014 to commemorate the club's historic tenth UEFA Champions League title (La Décima). Creation: This anthem was written by Spanish journalist and writer Manuel Jabois and produced by Moroccan-Swedish producer RedOne (Nadyr Khayat). RedOne, a lifelong fan, wanted to create a simple, catchy song that everyone in the stadium could sing along to quickly. Recording: The entire Real Madrid squad at the time, including players like Cristiano Ronaldo, Sergio Ramos, Gareth Bale, and manager Carlo Ancelotti, recorded the song together in the studio. Popularity: It became an instant hit, topping the iTunes charts in Spain and 17 other countries. It is now the primary anthem played at the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium before matches and after every goal scored. Centenary Version: In 2002, a special "Centenario" anthem was also created for the club's 100th anniversary, sung by the famous tenor and Real Madrid fan Plácido Domingo. That version was intended for the celebrations and did not replace the traditional anthems.
