Most reggae fans, especially Bob Marley fans, know who Roger Steffens is. Roger is an archivist, an author, a lecturer, a radio host a historian and he's known to be the foremost authority on Bob Marley's life and career. In the summer of 2024, Roger sold his reggae collection, described by Variety as an "enormous archive of vinyl and other memorabilia — which is widely acknowledged to include the largest and most comprehensive collection of Marley artifacts in the world," which will he housed in Jamaica, fulfilling his life-long dream. We interviewed him way back in 1988 for Reggae Strong, and in this video excerpt, Roger explains the origins of his collection and his interest in reggae music, Bob Marley and Jamaican culture. There are several living legends in the reggae world who have been part of the community and culture for half a century now. Not all of them are musicians. We are happy and pleased to know Roger and to see him finally get the recognition and reward he deserves.
