I decided to break-in and trail test a new set of hiking shoes for cooler weather in slick and gravel conditions where it would make it or break it. My daughter and her friend accompanied me to the Little Grand Canyon trail which was leaf covered and slick on the rocks from the rains last night. In traversing down a wet rocky canyon, I slipped only once in an area with leaves, water, and a lack of balance due to my backpack and fanny pack getting in the way. I caught myself with my wrist, but that was my only incident. Once I had a wooden hiking stick, I had more sure footedness traversing down that area without losing my balance. On solid ground and on both paved and gravel conditions, the shoes performed well. Coming back up another wet leafy stream filled canyon, the shoes performed well enough without any adverse issues. Inov8 is a UK company, whose shoes feature Graphene infused in the outer soles to give a sticky grip and an extended wear compared to normal rubber outer soles. The Rocfly G390’s have a wide toe box similar to an Altra trail runner. The drop on these hightops is 6mm. The stated weight is 390 grams. Compared to my other hiking shoes, these performed well so far. My old Merrell hightops used to be my standard until the Vibram soles slipped a bit on wet surfaces. I switched to Brooks trail runners (Caldera and Cascade models) which have a soft grippy rubber outer sole. For cooler and wetter weather, I picked up a pair of Salomon Ultra 3 GTX hightops in extra wide width (normal Salomon’s generally run narrow in width) which perform well in wet conditions. Pro’s: Wide toe box for plenty of room. Grippy sole material. Split bottom adjusts to trail conditions. Cons: Price Availability (UK based company, so shopping online is your best bet) Vivid color scheme could be a turnoff to some. Initially when I got these, I noticed the insoles were pressing up against my arches in front of my heels. Since I have plantar fasciitis, I usually use self-forming memory foam inserts in some of my shoes to resolve any comfort issues. With this pair, I slipped in a cheap flat Walmart insole pad inside each shoe and let it pad things up a little bit. After hiking several miles with them today, I didn’t have any arch or heel pain, which is good. With the wide toe box, there was little breaking in needed.
