At first Leibowitz was a critic of Maimonides. However, over time he came to admire Maimonides’ effort to unite faith and reason. Like Maimonides, Leibowitz addressed the struggles of those torn between religious tradition and modern secular thought and he became a modern “Guide of the Perplexed” himself, offering a path for religious life grounded in practice amid intellectual challenges. Prof. Yeshayahu Leibowitz (1903-1994) of Jerusalem was an original, learned, and bold philosopher. He developed a fascinating approach to Judaism, based on the philosophies of Maimonides and Immanuel Kant. He fearlessly discussed the most difficult questions of religion, Zionism, and the State of Israel. He was a source of inspiration to many and also irritated many – but to this day he remains an Israeli thinker who should not be ignored. Zeev Harvey is Professor Emeritus in the Department of Jewish Thought at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. His research focuses on medieval and modern Jewish philosophy.
