Astrophotography in the snow, specifically creating a nightscape image of Orion and the Winter Circle asterism of stars in a white landscape setting has been on my bucket list for some years now. In this new adventure with Corne Ouwehand I was finally able to chase the dream! It had been snowing in some parts of The Netherlands around new moon. Besides that the last minute weather models forecasted a sudden change to clear skies. What are the odds? A very rare convergence of circumstances indeed! Already on our way to a different location, we noticed there was almost no snow on the ground. To make things worse, clouds were rolling in. We made the call to change plans dramatically, hopped in the car and drove 1,5 hours South to a light polluted bortle 5 zone, but hopefully with more snow on the ground. Would we be able to pull out enough details? Maybe with the help of a Hydrogen Alpha (h-alpha) filter? I also explain what the Winter Circle actually is and show you how I use Starspikes Pro 4 to create a glow effect around the brighter stars. In this vlog I use the astro modified Canon 6D with a Sigma Art 14-24mm f/2.8 lens and the Fuji X-T2 with the Samyang/Rokinon 12mm f/2. Sky was tracked on a SkyWatcher Star Adventurer Pro.
