The 24 Solar Terms The 24 Solar Terms are a traditional East Asian seasonal system that divides the year into 24 segments based on the Sun’s position along the ecliptic. In agricultural societies, this system played an important role in determining farming periods and predicting seasonal changes. Basic Principle The 24 Solar Terms divide the Sun’s apparent path along the ecliptic into 24 sections of 15 degrees each. Each term occurs at approximately 15-day intervals. While their solar-calendar dates remain fairly constant, the corresponding lunar-calendar dates vary each year. The 24 Solar Terms (Spring – Summer – Autumn – Winter) Spring: Beginning of Spring (Ipchun), Rain Water (Usu), Awakening of Insects (Gyeongchip), Spring Equinox (Chunbun), Clear and Bright (Cheongmyeong), Grain Rain (Gogu) Summer: Beginning of Summer (Ipha), Grain Full (Soman), Grain in Ear (Mangjong), Summer Solstice (Haji), Minor Heat (Soseo), Major Heat (Daeseo) Autumn: Beginning of Autumn (Ipchu), End of Heat (Cheoseo), White Dew (Baengno), Autumn Equinox (Chubun), Cold Dew (Hanro), First Frost (Sanggang) Winter: Beginning of Winter (Ipdong), Minor Snow (Soseol), Major Snow (Daeseol), Winter Solstice (Dongji), Minor Cold (Sohan), Major Cold (Daehan) Meaning of Major Terms Beginning of Spring marks the start of spring. Spring Equinox and Autumn Equinox are the days when day and night are equal in length. Summer Solstice is the longest day of the year, while the Winter Solstice is the longest night. Awakening of Insects symbolizes animals emerging from hibernation. Grain Rain represents the rains beneficial for farming. Grain in Ear indicates the time for sowing seeds. First Frost signals the arrival of the season’s first frost. Today, the 24 Solar Terms are still used in Korea, China, and Japan as references for traditional culture and seasonal customs, and in 2016 they were inscribed on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
