The store of 2019 may be about giving retailers to provide personalized and extended service by automating the check-out process. Aipoly Co-Founder, Simon Edwardson, explains that their technology allows pre-registered shoppers to simply pick up an item and leave without having to reach for their respective wallets. Aipoly's facial recognition software, running on an off-the-shelf computer, identifies registered shoppers and accounts for any items they take and bill them accordingly. More than helping retailers remove friction from the purchasing process, with the array of cameras and data collection capabilities, Aipoly's software provides insight into shopping patterns through tools such as heat maps. Edwardson suggests that, beyond automating away jobs, their technology will allow retailers to deploy front-line personnel to provide more personalized service throughout the store, instead of being stuck behind a cash register in a traditional store. AIpoly's real-time insight directs store personnel to customers who may have questions (e.g. they are lingering in front of a certain display). It will also make it potentially easier to create shopping experiences that stay open up 24-hours per day (e.g. this could be useful in a hotel convenience store).
