Water companies own more than 350,000 km of water pipes in the UK and spend millions repairing leaks and replacing old pipes each year. Achieving leakage reduction targets will require robust design, construction and installation of thrust blocks to avoid future leaks. Major infrastructure projects and building 1.5 million new homes will further increase demand and require service diversions in addition to pressure pipes required for the sewerage network, industrial premises, power stations, and treatment works are considered. The laying of new pressure pipelines, and the replacement or diversion of existing routes account for a considerable investment by the water sector, and it’s important that guidance is up to date and reflects current and emergent practices. This webinar introduced CIRIA’s new guidance, Buried pressure pipelines – designing for thrust restraint (C816) – which follows a review and update of our widely used 1994 guide – on the design of these structures to reflect new materials (particularly polyethylene), practices and changes to standards and codes.
