Last month in downtown Shanghai, I attended a tasting featuring Bai’nian Winery from Xinjiang, China. While I had mixed feelings about some of the wines, the foreign guests at the table seemed to genuinely enjoy them — especially the Sangiovese, Marselan, and Cabernet Sauvignon. In this video, I explore why our reactions were so different, and what this says about palate preferences, structure, herbal notes, and the evolving landscape of Chinese wine. Xinjiang is one of China’s most important wine regions, known for its intense sunlight, high sugar accumulation, and bold wine styles. As Chinese wineries continue to experiment and refine their craft, the diversity and quality gap between producers is becoming more visible. This channel documents my ongoing exploration of Chinese wine — thoughtfully, fairly, and without hype. Subscribe if you’re curious about how Chinese wine compares globally.
