(5 Sep 2017) The frontrunner in the Austrian elections wants to restrict access to unemployment benefits for foreigners. On Tuesday, the 31-year-old Foreign Minister and leader of the OEVP peoples party, Sebastian Kurz, outlined his plan to make cuts to Austria's extensive social welfare system – especially when it comes to asylum seekers and workers from other EU countries. Kurz wants to limit access to unemployment benefits for foreigners. Only after having worked in Austria for 5 years a foreigner should be able to receive unemployment benefits. Other plans include reductions in government assistance to migrants and asylum seekers. He also plans to lower taxes for the first three income levels. The response to the OEVP's plans are mixed.
