I struggled with the idea of wearing a crucifix, because, at the time, it seemed like idolatry to me. But God revealed a broader perspective for me. Idolatry is the practice of worshiping graven images. But I knew that a crucifix was not an idol, at least, not for me. So, I did what I always do when I want to hear (in my thoughts) the word of God. I started writing a poem on the subject. I've done this many time, with many topics, hoping that God will reveal what truth I can understand. The poem was much more detailed, but who has the time for ten minute songs? So I cropped it down to a lyric and created this song with what God taught me in the poem. It really does come down to you. If you worship through any kind of image, it's idolatry. But if you wear it as a reminder of what your salvation cost, and leave it at that, there's nothing wrong with it. You just have to remember that it is not to be worshiped. Jesus was tortured mercilessly, taking enough lashes from those Roman flagrums, also called flagellums, to kill even the strongest men. Not quickly, death came gradually, over the next few hours, and likely would have claimed Him whether He was crucified or not. The Roman's perfected the art of inflicting agony on their condemned. Jesus suffer far more than any of us can imagine, but the actual witnesses were able to form a fairly accurate impression. After all, crucifixion was form of torture, just as scourging was, that was intended to instill fear and obedience in the viewing populace. My crucifix is a reminder of my Savior's sacrifice, through suffering that I can barely imagine.
