Henry Catchpole gets into the driver’s seat of both the Dallara Stradale and its track-only sibling, the EXP, for this latest episode on the Hagerty YouTube channel. If you think you don’t know Dallara, well, actually you probably do. It is a major player in a huge number of the world’s race series, from IndyCar to Le Mans and even F1, but mostly in the background. It also helps many of the world’s most famous car manufacturers, such as Bugatti, Maserati, Alfa Romeo and plenty more that it can’t officially talk about. The man who founded the company in 1972 is Giampaolo Dallara. He began his career working for Ferrari, then Maserati and then Lamborghini where, most famously, he designed the world’s first mid-engined supercar, the Miura. Today, aged 89, he still goes into the office and we interviewed him about what he learned from Ferrari and what the inspiration was for the Stradale. We also have a look around the vast Dallara factory and see probably the world’s most sophisticated simulator. Then we pop down the road into Varano de’ Melegari to the site of the original Dallara Garage, where the Stradale and EXP are now built. Daniele Guarnaccia shows us around and explains why the Stradale has a fabulous carbon tub, but also a 2.3-litre, turbocharged, four-cylinder Ford engine (albeit one tuned to 394hp by Bosch). Finally, Henry gets to drive the Stradale on the beautiful but wickedly bumpy roads near the factory and then climbs into the 493bhp EXP to do some quick laps of the Autodromo Riccardo Paletti. The EXP is not only more powerful it also ups the downforce from an already impressive 1800lb (820kg) to 2800lb (1270kg), which is a considerable amount for any car, let alone one weighing just 1962lb (890kg) dry. We hope you enjoy this latest episode of the driver’s seat - the film crew on this were Glenn Winhall and Benjamin Cornish.
