Following the October Uprising in Hungary during 1956, the NCB, then short of 10,000 men employed 2,500 refugees. They were billeted all around the North Of England and taught English for 12 weeks before being sent to training centers then off to the pits in Yorkshire and the East Midlands as well as the rest of the Coalfields. In many areas the NUM lodges voted not to accept them. This is the story of a school teacher in Hexham, affectionately known as the 'Godmother' who helped 300 of them find work and homes. We follow the Dargo family to the Cumbrian Fellside village of Croglin where Bill found work in the small colliery on the Fellside. Tragedy again hit the family before they found a secure new life in the Alston Coalfield.
