Patient and public involvement (PPI) is a current trend aimed at making research more relevant, ethical and impactful for people. This process requires adaptation and training for both researchers and patients involved. In the field of health and brain diseases, especially those affecting reasoning, cognitive ability or communication, there is a need to define who is best placed to represent the interests of those who cannot adequately express their needs or preferences.
