Repentance: Introspection & Reform Do you struggle with finding peace in your life? Do people tell you that you're stubborn and hard to get along with, but you don't know why? The practice of "repentance" can help us introspect, see the source of our problems, and learn to change our troublesome patterns of behavior. The Buddhist practice of repentance has long been a tool to help overcome "behavioral obstructions," deeply-rooted patterns of thinking, speaking, and doing that cause trouble for ourselves and others. Craving, anger, and attachment to views drives us to act in harmful ways--so we make mistakes. Since the time of the Buddha, he recommended that when we find it hard to change these deep-seated patterns, to intentionally reflect on them, accept the consequences, and vow to change. Repentance is thus a tool for reforming our ways and finding greater ease and freedom from cravings, anger, and rigid views. So if you've been feeling guilty because you made a mistake, repentance can be a practice to relieve the guilt by simply owning up to the mistake and vowing to change. In this way, we reclaim our sense of purity and freedom. 00:00 Intro 00:46 Prostration & meditation 03:02 Repentance and making vows 07:53 Obstacles 13:33 Introspection 14:49 Routine 16:25 Self-awareness 19:53 Application 21:54 Chanting and repentance 25:03 Guilt, shame, and self-hatred 30:42 Repentance and self-compassion 32:46 Are you stubborn?
