The Ovaltiney's Concert Party began in 1935 on Radio Luxembourg at a time when the commercial-free BBC still had a broadcasting monopoly in Britain. It was centred around Harry Hemsley's radio family billed as 'The Adventures of the Fortune Family' featuring Elsie, Winnie and Johnny. The program was introduced with the famous Ovaltiney's Song as follows: We are the Ovaltineys, little girls and boys, Make your request, we'll not refuse you, We are here just to amuse you. Would you like a song or story? Will you share our joys? At games or sports we're more than keen No merrier children could be seen Because we all drink Ovaltine We're happy girls and boys. Listeners were invited to join the Ovaltiney's Club, with badge and rule-book, and each week the Chief Ovaltiney gave out a message in Secret Code. Children took part in the show, led in the songs by Clarence Wright. The children from Italia Conti's School were only identified by the letters in Ovaltine: Ivy Woodward was known as 'V'. Production was interrupted when the station fell into German hands during World War II. Originally a drink marketed by a Swiss doctor called George Wander, Ovaltine was (and is) known as Ovomaltine on the Continent, but the name was shortened when it was first introduced in Britain in 1910. Advertising was always Ovaltine's forte, and the rosy-cheeked dairymaid in the ads with her basket of fresh eggs and sheaf of barley epitomised its spirit of simple purity.
