On Thursday 20th March, 2025, the New London Synagogue community came to together to honour the memory of our beloved former Chazan, Stephen Cotsen who passed away on 6th March. Stephen joined New London as a member in 1996, served as Head of the Sunday School from 1999 and subsequently Chazan until 2012 when he returned to Cardiff to care for his family. He returned to New London and served, again, as Chazan from 2016 to 2022. His leadership, as a member of the team, as a teacher, tutor, caterer extraordinaire and mentor let alone as his contribution to our prayer services from the Bimah, has left a huge mark on the community for whom his memory will always be for a blessing. As well as the standard Maariv Service and Memorial prayers, led by New London’s current Cantorial Leads, David Djemal and Yoav Oved, this service features musical and liturgical highlights including Yigdal led by on of Stephen’s many Bar and Bat Mitzvah students, a performance of a piece written, by Stephen, arranged and accompanied by former New London Choir Director, Joseph Finlay and a taste of opera. Rabbi Natasha Mann delivered the eulogy and Rabbi Jeremy Gordon shared a poem composed in Stephen’s honour on the occasion of his first retirement. HeChazan Yonah Ben Chaim Yaakov u'Miriam, sweet singer in Israel, rest in peace. The video here opens with Chazan Stephen singing Hitkabetzu Malachim, a Simchat Torah Piyut.
