Sir John Whittingdale asked the Foreign Secretary for clarity on the UK Government’s position regarding recent political developments in Venezuela. He noted that many Venezuelans were celebrating the end of the Maduro and Chávez regime, which he described as marked by human rights abuses, criminality and economic decline. However, he expressed concern that, after the Foreign Secretary’s statement, it remained unclear whether the UK Government supported the actions that had taken place. He therefore asked what position the UK would adopt at the ongoing UN Security Council discussions. The Foreign Secretary responded by reiterating that the UK has long supported a peaceful transition from authoritarian rule to democracy in Venezuela. She stated that the Government did not regret the removal of Nicolás Maduro but emphasised that Venezuela had not yet achieved a functioning democracy. She confirmed that the UK would continue to advocate for international law and work towards a peaceful, democratic transition.
