How Engaging with Visual Art Can Improve Affect (Drake) | My research investigates the affective benefits of everyday art-making for children and adults. In a series of studies, I have shown that using drawing to distract (shifting attention away from negative feelings) improves affect more than drawing to express (expressing negative feelings). More recently, I have examined whether viewing art has the same affective benefits as making art. I have found that while both making and viewing art reduces negative affect, only making art improves positive affect. However, viewing art may have the potential to improve empathy. Taken together, this work demonstrates that engaging in the visual arts is one effective way to improve and regulate our affect. Arts-based and Art Therapy Strategies for Pursuing Peace (Potash) | Art making and creative process can parallel peacebuilding processes for disrupting presumptions, stimulating emotional experiences, encouraging risk-taking, and fostering openness. Similarly, art therapy offers the means for facilitating personal expression, channeling emotions, embracing conflict, and identifying purposeful actions. Although mental health practitioners have traditionally focused on individual and interpersonal wellbeing, attention to social dynamics and healthy democracies are needed for a holistic approach to health. Frameworks and case examples demonstrate arts-based approaches for diminishing tensions while fostering belonging.
