Hidden Figures: Dr. Alexa Irene Canady

Alexa Canady was the first female African-American neurosurgeon in the United States (some say she was the first woman neurosurgeon, period). Born in Lansing in 1950, Canady attended Michigan University for college and medical school. She was interested in neurosurgery despite being discouraged from pursuing it by advisers and having trouble finding internships, and in 1976 she became the first woman African-American neurosurgery resident in America. When she finished her residency in 1981, she became the first Black woman neurosurgeon in the United States. Canady went on to become director of neurosurgery at the Children's Hospital and received numerous teaching and medical awards, including the American Medical Women's Association President's Award in 1993 and being inducted into the Michigan Women's Hall of Fame. #HiddenFigures #BlackHERstoryMonth ****************** Follow me on social media!
