In this video, Kiran Tipirneni, M.D., F.A.C.S., a board-certified otolaryngologist at the Ear, Nose, Throat & Plastic Surgery Associates describes different treatment options for snoring. “Snoring by itself is not a medical condition,” says Dr. Tipirneni. “But it does cause a social nuisance by keeping your bed partner awake. There are treatments available in the otolaryngology office to help reduce snoring, some of which include reducing the vibratory action of the soft palate. One treatment is called an injection snoreplasty where a chemical is injected into the soft palate, which stiffens the palate, and prevents it from vibrating as much.” “Other treatment options include what's called a radiofrequency reduction of the soft palate,” says Dr. Tipirneni. “This is a wand that's placed into certain areas of the soft palate and it creates scar tissue to harden the palate so it becomes less vibratory.” “If it seems like the tongue is the area where most of the snoring is coming from, then an oral appliance may be helpful,” continues Dr. Tipirneni. “What is an oral appliance? It's a custom-fitted oral appliance that we perform here in the office to help keep the mouth closed at night.
