World Ranger Day | Great Plains Conservation

We owe so much to conservation field rangers worldwide in this battle, where weighing up risk against reward by so many poachers is the game. This week, which includes World Ranger Day, we want to acknowledge rangers everywhere. Their presence and diligence keep wildlife at the numbers we need to have healthy ecosystems, tourism and lives that rely on Nature for our wholeness. This month, we have had the opportunity to work with just some of those rangers, looking at accommodation, their working conditions, and what they do. We just approved and agreed to build a camp for the park rangers in Zimbabwe’s private Sapi Reserve at G Camp. Similarly, I inspected the rangers’ accommodation in the Olare Motorogi Conservancy, where Mara Plains is situated. I was not happy. We cannot expect our rangers to live in tin huts and expect them to take care of our wildlife effectively day after day. These are not Great Plains guides and conservation rangers, but communal reserve and conservancy rangers that are normally outside of our care. As a result, Great Plains and the Great Plains Foundation want to fund a revamp of the accommodation here. We will match the funds raised. The budget is $90,000, and we are well on covering that. With a solid team that is well taken care of and appreciated by us, I know we can receive 100% from them.
