The Forbidden Move the Navy Decided to Screw
June 20, 1944. Lieutenant Tom Bronn had been airborne for four hours. His fuel gauge was inching toward empty as his Avenger droned through darkness, only black Pacific below. Then the ocean exploded into light. Nearly every ship in Task Force 58 shattered blackout protocol at once. Searchlights blazed skyward. Deck lights, running lights, signal lamps - everything burning bright. Battleships fired star shells that burst overhead in cascading phosphorus. Enemy submarines still prowled these waters. A single torpedo could send a thousand men to the bottom. And still they lit every light they had. Bronn spotted the nearby Lexington's deck, already swarmed with aircraft. The landing signal officer waved him off - try another carrier. But his engine was already dying. If he couldn’t find a place to land, in a few seconds, he'd be in the water.
