Fanmade. What we'd love to see in Season 5. Starring Jim Caviezel, Michael Emerson, Kevin Chapman, Amy Acker, Sarah Shahi and (formerly) Taraji P. Henson Some background to the fanmade story behind the video: We were asking ourselves about the political players and their philosophy that could be behind the all-seeing intelligent surveillance system (AI) Samaritan run by private corporation Decima Technologies. Thus far, Samaritan's goal mainly consisted of it cementing its own power. We could describe this as phase 1. Now that it has mostly achieved it, a phase 2 would probably be launched. Samaritan is an open system. As such it can be programmed towards specific ends. This includes it being used for specific purposes by a set of actors. Realistically, it is unlikely that in such an endeavour one person (Greer) can act indepently from the relevant power players that operate in- and outside the shadows. This is a theme left largely unexplored thus far and it plays right into John Reese's past. What if the person who recruited him into the CIA, who was his mentor that once led him onto the wrong path and who is a master of deception is part of a secret cabal that is now working in concert with Greer's Decima? And to what end are they doing so? If we answer the question the way done in the video ... then the technological war obtains an interesting human note ... and then the saving of individual people by Harold Finch and John Reese gets a completely new, a higher philosophical meaning in a larger discussion as well. :) Especially if the number of people such as Taylor Carter come up which make the meaning of the individual even more comprehensible. Some non-fictional background on what the secret group operating in the shadows could look like: “There does exist, and has existed for a generation, an international Anglophile network which operates, to some extent, in the way the radical Right believes the Communists act. […] I know of the operations of this network because I have studied it for twenty years and was permitted for two years, in the early 1960’s, to examine its papers and secret records. I have no aversion to it or to most of its aims and have, for much of my life, been close to it and to many of its instruments. I have objected, both in the past and recently, to a few of its policies […] in general my chief difference of opinion is that it wishes to remain unknown, and I believe its role in history is significant enough to be known.” "[...] deliberate policy of secrecy which this Group has adopted, partly because the Group itself [... is] partly concealed by being hidden behind formally organized groups of no obvious political significance.” -- Carroll Quigley (1910-1977) was a professor at the School of Foreign Service at Georgetown University and mentor to U.S. President Clinton. He was an instructor at Princeton and Harvard; a consultant to the U.S. Department of Defense, the House Committee on Astronautics; and the U.S. Navy. Central work: “Tragedy and Hope: A History of the World in Our Time” On a fictional level there are parallels to "The Party" from Orwell's 1984: "The Party seeks power entirely for its own sake. We are not interested in the good of others; we are interested solely in power. Not wealth or luxury or long life or happiness: only power, pure power. What pure power means you will understand presently. We are different from all the oligarchies of the past, in that we know what we are doing. […] They pretended, perhaps they even believed, that they had seized power unwillingly and for a limited time, and that just round the corner there lay a paradise where human beings would be free and equal. We are not like that. We know that no one ever seizes power with the intention of relinquishing it. Power is not a means, it is an end. One does not establish a dictatorship in order to safeguard a revolution; one makes the revolution in order to establish the dictatorship. The object of persecution is persecution. The object of torture is torture. The object of power is power. Now do you begin to understand me? […] It is time for you to gather some idea of what power means. The first thing you must realize is that power is collective. The individual only has power in so far as he ceases to be an individual. You know the Party slogan: 'Freedom is Slavery'. Has it ever occurred to you that it is reversible? Slavery is freedom. Alone - free - the human being is always defeated." Such ideas of tyrannical nature ascribe a higher place to a few while abolishing general equality among man. Free will is being replaced by absolute control. In the fictional realm Samaritan could serve as a tool towards that end. "Our" team would signify a resistance standing up for values such as "all men are created equal" and that the individual is relevant.
