Plunge into the dramatic story behind some of NASA’s most iconic black hole videos! For Black Hole Week 2024, NASA released stunning, scientifically accurate visualizations showing flights around and directly into a supermassive black hole. In this behind-the-scenes feature: Discover how a small team at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center, led by astrophysicist Jeremy Schnittman, spent months creating these visually striking products. Learn how Schnittman developed custom computer code using "ray tracing" to model a black hole's accretion disk and intense space-warping effects, tracking virtual photons back to their source. Moving a virtual camera through this warped space increased the difficulty immensely. While initial tests ran on a laptop, the final jaw-dropping 8K versions required thousands of frames generated by the Goddard supercomputer, "Discover." But no complex project is without drama. Watch to see how the team rushed to overcome unexpected last-minute code issues as the deadline for Black Hole Week approached. 👇 Official Visualizations & Download 👇 This video and the visualizations featured can be freely shared and downloaded at NASA's Scientific Visualization Studio (SVS). 🔔 Subscribe to the NASAura YouTube channel for more stunning space visualizations and science stories! 🌌 Credits & Attributions Visualizations & Data: NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) Data Visualizers: Jeremy Schnittman (NASA/GSFC), Brian Powell (NASA/GSFC) Video Production Team: Producer/Narrator/Editor: Scott Wiessinger (eMITS) Videographers: Sophia Roberts (eMITS), Scott Wiessinger (eMITS), Amogh Thakkar (Intern), Karly Noetzel (Intern) Interviewers: Scott Wiessinger (eMITS), Chiara Villanueva (Intern) Editorial & Science: Interviewee: Jeremy Schnittman (NASA/GSFC) Science Writer: Francis Reddy (University of Maryland College Park) 🎵 Music Credits (Universal Production Music): "Beautiful Awesome” - David Husband and James William Banbury [PRS] “Games Show Sphere 01” & "02" - Anselm Kreuzer [GEMA] “Rolling” - Jaremy Aiello and Mike Mullen [BMI] “Question Time” - Paul Louis Reeves [PRS] “Tactical Analysis” - Clinton Rusich, Matthew St Laurent, Christian Telford, and David Travis Edwards [ASCAP] “Awakening Yearning” - David Ashok Ramani and Jonathan Elias [ASCAP] “Tidal Force” - Thomas Daniel Bellingham [PRS] ⚖️ Usage Guidelines & Disclaimer: While the video in its entirety can be shared without permission, the music and some individual imagery may have been obtained through permission and may not be excised or remixed in other products.
