The 30 for 30 series, developed by the Imigani Project in collaboration with IGIHE and featuring 30 Rwandan artists from different generations, marks the 30th commemoration of the Genocide against the Tutsi. Each narrative probes the deep-seated impact of the Genocide, highlighting how the arts offer a depth of insight and emotional resonance beyond what traditional forms of reporting and documentation, such as news articles, history books, and documentaries, can provide. As such, the arts are portrayed as a powerful tool for understanding and processing the emotional aftermath of genocide, offering perspectives that are more nuanced and emotionally impactful than those found in more conventional sources of information. This episode features Myriam Birara, a painter and filmmaker, who gained recognition with her film "The Bride" at the Berlinale in 2023. The film delves into Rwanda's post-genocide societal scars and highlights her impact on both Rwandan and international cinema. In this episode, Myriam shares insights that challenge simplistic narratives of sorrow, offering a richer, more humanising view of Rwandan life. Her storytelling emphasises hope and renewal, underscoring the importance of diverse Rwandan experiences and showcasing how Rwandans navigate life beyond their collective past. This acknowledgement of her unique vantage point enriches the themes in her creative narrative, highlighting the profound impact of her work.
