Firstly, it's so encouraging to see schools everywhere embrace systematic synthetic phonics. Many people have worked relentlessly to bring reading science to classrooms all over the world and the results are showing. The next step is to make sure that getting students to read is not the end-all. Writing is a far greater gift. Being able to learn through the act of writing is something that not every student leaves school with. This needs attention. Fluent, accurate spelling is one of the pillars of writing development. For many, it will not be achieved by simply relating sounds to symbols. The fact is, English orthography has layers that can and should be systematically revealed and learned to mastery! I have been working with a primary school in Queensland, Australia since the end of 2023, and last week we recorded several hours of demonstration lessons for use by their team. They trained all of their staff in phonics and, in partnership with Lifelong Literacy, they are now weaving high quality spelling, morphology, writing, and vocabulary lessons through their scope and sequence. I cannot wait to see their results over the next 12 months. I have put together a small snippet of what these demonstration lessons look like. The hours of footage will be stored on a school-wide network and accessed by teachers for the following purposes: To give high quality, up to date examples of best practice To be raised as discussion points between in-school coaches and teaching staff To be viewed by intervention staff so that multi-tiered systems of support have low-variance To act as a video-playbook for new staff so that low variance is consistent and ongoing The various lessons were specifically requested by leadership in consultation with staff. We targeted areas of uncertainty as well as areas of interest/curiosity and produced permanent, tangible resources in real time with real students in their particular context. If you're a school leader wondering where to go next now that phonics is established, this is the answer. Do enjoy the video!
