(((IEMN))) The Visions Of Shiva - How Much Can You Take ? (Emotional) - MFS 1993 - Trance

© MFS 1993 Written and produced by Cosmic Baby (Harald Blüchel) and Paul van Dyk Harald Blüchel began producing Acid House tracks in 1989 under the names B-Culture, Startrek, and Cosmic Baby. in 1991 he released his first ever Trance recordings under the name Cosmic Enterprises for the "White Label" subdivision of Low Spirit Recordings. Blüchel began collaborating with DJ Kid Paul under the name Energy 52 in 1991 and released the records "State Of Mind" and "Expression / Eternity / The Bassline". In 1992 the first Cosmic Baby release "Transcendental Overdrive" was released on the fledgling Berlin MFS label set up by Mark Reeder and helped shape the early sound of the label that Reeder called "Trance" music. In 1992 MFS also released the debut Cosmic Baby album "Stellar Supreme" and "Tranceformed From Beyond" the first ever "Trance" compilation released in the world which was dominated by productions and remixes by Cosmic Baby. These early works on MFS were a major part of the Trance explosion in Germany in 1992 that started with MFS and followed with the Eye Q label and many others by 1993. Trance as a genre expanded throughout Europe in the early 90's and got more popular by the mid to late 90's, finally hitting its peak in 1999 before going mainstream. Visions Of Shiva was a very brief collaboration between Cosmic Baby and up and coming DJ Paul van Dyk that began in 1992 with their first single "Perfect Day" released on the MFS label. This was the first material PVD had ever produced. In 1993 they followed up with the even better "How Much Can You Take" single that featured variations of the title track known as the "Physical" and "Emotional" mixes. This record was produced the same week as "Cafe Del Mar" by Energy 52, a now classic production by Kid Paul and Cosmic Baby. The CD Single featured two other tracks as well "A New Beginning" and the Cosmic Baby production "Voices From Another World". Jens Wojnar also helped produce this single (though he never gets any credit) and worked alongside Cosmic Baby for most of his works. Cosmic Baby left MFS in 1993 and briefly signed with Logic Records in 1994 releasing the single "Fantasia" and the album "Thinking About Myself" before setting up his own "Time Out Of Mind" label in the mid 90's. As a result, Mark Reeder focused on PVD for MFS and in 1994 the first Paul van Dyk release "The Green Valley EP" was released, shortly after that the full length "45 RPM" would follow featuring the now classic "For An Angel". Paul van Dyk would go on to become a Trance superstar, Harald Blüchel kept recording smaller Experimental Trance, Ambient, and Modern Classical works for his own label under the name Cosmic Baby and later under his own name. Interestingly on Cosmic Baby's website it has come to light that the reason Visions Of Shiva didn't last long was because Paul van Dyk was taking all the credit for the records, and Harald Blüchel claims that he was the main producer on Visions Of Shiva and that PVD didn't contribute much at all except for being present for the mix of the Physical version. Unlike Cosmic Baby, PVD became the face of Trance in the mid to late 90's and ultimately sank MFS as well when he left the label to start his own imprint Vandit in 1998. This resulted with Mark Reeder taking van Dyk to court over his "Out There And Back" album that Reeder wanted on MFS but in the end, didn't get. Not long after that MFS ceased operations in 1999 as it could not compete with the onslaught of new Trance labels and productions that were flooding the market. This quote taken from Cosmic Baby's website tells more about the breakup of Visions Of Shiva: "It is not easy to speak of "Visions of Shiva" without touching a few nerves. "How much can you take" was written during the same (one-week) recording session as "Cafe del Mar" with Jens. Let me just say this: it would be great if Paul van Dyk, now with the distance of time between us and the fact that he himself is a recognized international superstar, had the honesty and strength of character to explain once and for all what he contributed to the content of this piece (apart from being present at the Mix of the "physical" version)."
