After much hoopla and fanfare, the day has finally arrived when I share Mahler’s masterpiece “Das Lied von der Erde” (The Songs of the Earth). It is a hybrid symphony/song cycle that lasts a little over an hour, and it has six movements. It is easily the darkest music I have ever heard. It features a tenor and a contralto who sing in alternating movements (the tenor in the odd movements and the contralto in the even movements). I’m not going to subject you to the entire work, but rather I will just share the first and last movements. Believe me, the bookends alone are plenty as they will leave you emotionally exhausted. Just before writing this music, Mahler experienced multiple tragedies, one right after another: He was fired from his post as Director of the Vienna Court Opera, he learned of his wife’s extramarital affair with famed architect Walter Gropius (I can’t help but find it funny that his name contains the word “grope”), Mahler’s four year old daughter died from scarlet fever, and he was diagnosed with a terminal illness. Sadly, Mahler never had the opportunity to hear this music as he died six months before its November 20th premiere in 1911. The first movement is the most upbeat, if you want to call it that, of the six movements and is entitled “Drinking Song of Misery.” It is an amalgam of Mahler shaking his fists as well as his deep despair. The vocal part is extremely difficult to sing as it is both very high and it requires the singer to compete with a full-forced orchestral part. The English tenor, Stuart Skelton, delivers the goods in this outstanding performance as his voice as well as his face convey it all. Below are the lyrics, abridged for brevity (please read aloud if you do not mind): “The wine calls from your goblet, but don’t drink it yet, as I wish to make a toast. ‘When sorrow nears, the joy in our songs withers and dies. Heaven’s blue will last forever, and the earth will blossom every spring, but you, how long will you live? You need only to look at the moonlit graves of those who came before. Drink up my friends as life is full of misery, and dark is death.’” (Please start at the beginning and stop at 8:24.)
