Join us as we drive in to the Mendocino National Forest post burn area to see first hand how much really did burn. We shot over 20 hours of video this trip (9/17/2020) so we are breaking it down in to small more condensed videos. Please follow along on the series as we bring you content as soon as we can get it out of post. We will be going in one to two times a week to get fresh video and pictures. We came in from I5 going West on FH7. We stopped along the way to video a lot and take pictures. The August Complex fire is a very impressive wildfire burn. There were a surprising amount of lightly burned or untouched patches scattered throughout. The amount of California acreage that has burned in 2020 is scary already and it's only September. It's crucial we protect people, structures, and livelihoods, but California lands are adapted to regular wildfire. We have to remind ourselves that periodic fires benefit the ecosystem. They clean out organic debris, dead brush, and undergrowth in patchwork areas, reduce pests and pathogens, thin out small trees, reducing competition and letting healthy survivors grow better, return nutrients to the soil, and stimulate the opening of serotinous cones and germination of fire adapted seeds.
