Turndown process transmitters: What are its function and benefits?

What does “turndown” actually mean? How do I set turndown with process transmitters and what advantages does it offer? In this video we explain the turndown function (sometimes also referred to as “span adjustment”) in the field of electronic pressure measurement. To measure pressure electronically, two types of instruments are normally used: pressure sensors and process transmitters. While both are used for many different industrial measuring tasks, process transmitters offer some additional functions in contrast to pressure sensors: ✅ Direct setting of the measurement parameters on the instrument ✅ Indication of important process information on the display ✅ Setting of turndown What is meant by turndown? The turndown function is used to set a scaled range within the measuring range. Thus, turndown increases the measurement accuracy within this range. Turndown can be configured in the depressurised state; setting via HART or other bus systems is also possible. 📌 In this video, the functionality of turndown is explained in more detail using an example: ✅ A process pressure transmitter has a measuring range of 0 to 1.6 bar. ✅ With the turndown function, a scaled range between 0.4 and 1.2 bar is selected.
