A very famous place with a history back to 1837. When you make a food tour in Lisboa egg tarts, known as "Pastel de Nata" with egg custard filling topped with cinnamon, is a traditional pastry you just HAVE to try. There is no other way to eat at least 2 a day. And where is the best one in Lisbon? Right, at Pastéis de Belém. We found out where the secret recipe for the pasteis de nata is hidden. Definitely something you have to put on your "things to do in lisbon" or "things to do in portugal". Eating them an experience no one should miss out! Pastéis de Belém is a family owned business. Managed by 3 owners. We were so lucky that we have been able to get to know one of them: Miguel Clarinha. The History of Pastéis de Belém It all started with the egg tart’s. (similar to pastel de Nata, but different recipe which you can just buy here in Pastéis de Belém) Since 1837 back in this time the bakery was only known to the locals that lived here in „Belém“. Slowly people from Lisbon started to visit the bakery too, either by tram or steamboats, because it was still quite far away from the city center. In the early 20th century it started slowly to become very famous in Portugal, especially in the 21st century with the tourism coming to Portugal. But one thing never changed, the recipe, which was invited in the monastery by nones and monks. Until today, every step is manual work except this one, filling the pastel with the egg custard. Trust me my love, you can taste that in every single bite. The Average pastel salary is: 20.000 A DAY. I think that says it all. To manage that amount the company have almost 200 employees, 306 seats and 50% of the customers are tourists, from all over the world, and the numbers are growing from year to year. The philosophy of Pastéis de Belém is to keep this company in the family, keep it special and don’t expand. That’s why it was never an option to open a franchise. Because this place is their home and that is the big mission to keep producing the pastel just in Belém. My personal favorites I highly recommend: pastel, pudding almond, duck spinach pastry, spicy beef pastry The origin of Pastel de Nata dates back to before the 18th century, where they were created by monks at the Jerónimos Monastery in the parish of Santa Maria de Belém in Lisbon. At that time, convents and monasteries used large quantities of egg-whites for starching clothes. It was quite common to use the leftover egg yolks to make cakes and pastries. Resulting in the proliferation of sweet pastry recipes throughout the country. Portugal is famed the world over for the Pastel de Nata – crispy, flaky layers of pastry with a delicious, creamy egg-custard filling and a dusting of cinnamon.
