Senior teammates and goalkeepers Sophia Smelich, a San Diego commit, and Westmont-bound Hailey Donaldson of Redondo Union High in California combined to record nine saves in a 0-0 girls soccer tie against visiting JSerra High of California in the second leg of the opening series in the CIF-Southern Section Open Division playoffs. Donaldson, who had six saves, withstood a late flurry from JSerra, which had four corner kicks and a pair of free kicks in the final 12 minutes, resulting in a combined eight shots down the stretch. Smelich made a pair of point-blank stops in the first half for Redondo Union, which recorded its 13th shutout of the season. The Sea Hawks secured a 2-1 victory Feb. 12 at JSerra in the opening match of the home-and-home series, resulting in Redondo Union advancing to the Open Division semifinals for the first time in program history. The Sea Hawks, who reached the semifinals in any division for the first time since winning the Division 2 title in 2022, will play Feb. 18 in the opening leg of the semifinals at Mater Dei.
