Planet Joker is known to be an atrocious shmup for the Saturn. And it is ! The game is terrible in every aspect : visually some 3D games from this era have retained a nice touch. Raystorm is one of them. Planet Joker was bad at the time and still is. The soundtrack; although not bad, loops at weird intervals and the shot SFXs are horrible. The gameplay is uninspired with repetitive waves that have no creativity whatsoever. Not everything is bad though : there’s a cool mech lineup to choose from. The weapons are pretty nice too and there's a charge attack. Bosses are quite varied with some nice designs, and the first one is an industrial excavator ! How cool is that !! The player can also do backflips when hugging the sides of the play area, an ability that can be abused to keep on rotating during the end of stage animation. An oddity for sure, but not one I’d recommend ! For this run I just prayed that the final bosses would not destroy me, given that some blue bullets can be totally random. At this point, one can only hope that this is the last time you’re gonna face them :)
