Yamaha's flagship drum model PHX has been produced since 2008 at the Yamaha Japan Factory by professional craftspeople who inherited knowledge of handcrafted drum manufacturing from the 50 years of history of Yamaha drum production. The unique Hybrid shell was designed to perfectly achieve the three targets of the PHX concept - more volume, more tone and more dynamic range. Learn more: https://www.yamaha.com/2/phx The shell uses the heaviest and hardest wood, Jatoba, in the centre core, and the wood plies get gradually softer toward the inner and outer surfaces. This construction allows the shell to vibrate perfectly, free of constraint. The Jatoba wood is surrounded on either side by layers of Kapur, another hard and heavy wood. Then, covering the Kapur is North American Maple, the softest wood in the whole shell used for the outer and inner shell plies. At Yamaha, manufacturing drum shells begins with selecting the materials. These woods are high quality and authenticated material that is environmentally conscious. Select woods are then cut into sheets with precision cut diagonal ends. Next, the plies are fit into a form and hammered into place by a highly-skilled craftsperson. When the plies are hammered from above, the diagonal ends are tightly closed, and the plies expand outward with even pressure for an intimate fit. Ply joints are evenly staggered when layered while maximizing overall shell strength. An airbag placed inside the shell and inflated at high-pressure puts even pressure on the shell's inner surface, creating a perfectly round shell with uniform thickness and excellent durability. This process is the Air-Seal System, used at Yamaha for over 50 years.
