In this Clinical Hub Talk, Dr. Mona Loutfy provides a biomedical view of HIV prevention for women. As an HIV specialist of over 20 years and Co-Founder of the Maple Leaf Medical PrEP Clinic, Dr. Loutfy brings strong clinical understanding of the HIV prevention context in Canada. Dr. Loutfy begins by reviewing the 2024 Canada surveillance report (linked below), wherein the data continues to demonstrate an alarming upwards trend in cases among women. With this context of HIV epidemiology, she takes Hub members through the 2025 Canadian HIV PrEP and PEP Guidelines, noting key recommendations around counselling. Moving to a critical look at the effectiveness of biomedical prevention, various international HIV prevention studies show incredible results for women, yet PrEP/PEP are still under-prescribed to this population. Dr. Loutfy closes the session by sharing the promising results from studies about Cabotegravir for prevention in pregnancy and breast/chestfeeding.
