🎬 Movies That Made Authors Say "What Happened to My Story?" 😱📚 1️⃣ The Lawnmower Man – A Complete Betrayal of Stephen King’s Story! 🔪😤 In 1992, New Line Cinema acquired the rights to Stephen King’s short story The Lawnmower Man. However, the movie adaptation turned out to be a complete disaster 😱. The filmmakers had difficulty expanding the short story into a full-length film, so they recycled an old, abandoned script and simply swapped in the main character’s name from King’s story. 🙄 When Stephen King watched the film, he was beyond upset. The movie had nothing to do with his original story. Furious, he took the studio to court and won a $2.5 million settlement. 💸😡 The filmmakers were forced to remove his name from the movie and no longer allowed to market the film as being based on King’s work. Talk about a major fail! 🎥❌ 2️⃣ I Know What You Did Last Summer – A Bloody Adaptation That Crossed the Line 🩸🎬 The film I Know What You Did Last Summer tells the story of a hook-wielding killer stalking young adults who tried to cover up a hit-and-run accident. But the author of the original novel, Lois Duncan, was deeply distressed after seeing the film. 📚➡️🎥 Not only was the film’s plot drastically different, but the novel was a suspenseful, non-violent story—nothing like the gory, slasher-filled movie that was made. To make matters worse, Lois Duncan’s own daughter had been murdered in real life, making the bloodshed on screen even harder for her to watch. 😔💔 The film’s violent direction felt like a second trauma for the author, who was already coping with such a deep personal loss. 🎥 More Crazy Adaptation Stories Here are some more examples where movie adaptations have completely missed the mark: 🔍 The Shining (1980) – Stephen King wasn’t a fan of Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining, either. He felt Kubrick’s adaptation was too cold and didn’t capture the emotional depth of his novel. In fact, King was so upset that he later went on to produce a more faithful TV miniseries adaptation. ❄️👎 🔍 The Hobbit (2012-2014) – Peter Jackson’s epic trilogy based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit faced massive backlash from fans who felt the story was dragged out unnecessarily and made more complex than it should have been. Many fans were disappointed to see the short novel stretched into three films. 🏞️📽️ 🔍 Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief (2010) – Rick Riordan, the author of the Percy Jackson series, wasn’t pleased with the film’s take on his characters and story. He criticized the changes to the plot and how the actors were older than their book counterparts. The lack of authenticity left fans of the books frustrated. ⚡😠 💬 What’s the Most Unfaithful Movie Adaptation You’ve Seen? Do you think filmmakers should be allowed to take creative liberties, or should they stick closely to the original material?
