Facelift: What is it? | Aesthetic Surgical Images A facelift is one of the most frequently performed procedures, today, in plastic surgery. Many people don't quite understand how or what exactly a facelift entails. A lot of times patients will think a so-called full facelift includes the forehead, the eyelids, and the face. When in fact, a facelift really only rejuvenates the lower one-third of the face and the neck. The forehead is a separate procedure; the eyelids are a separate procedure, in and of itself. Over the years there have been many different techniques described for the performance of a facelift. Many of them are distinguished mostly by the degree of invasiveness, consequently the recovery time, and the risks associated with it. The most superficial type of facelift would be simply undermining the skin and the fat layer of the face, drawing the skin back, and removing the extra back in the hairline, and back behind the ear in areas where we can conceal the scars. The next layer is called the SMAS layer, that's capital S, capital M, capital A, capital S. That's an acronym, or a abbreviation for the sub musculoaponeurotic system. It's a very thin, but very tough layer. There have been several techniques described that take the facelift one layer lower than just the skin, either tightening up that layer or actually removing pieces of it, so that we can tighten it up further. The deep plane facelift is the deepest one. The deep plane actually takes and elevates the facial structures off of the bone and pulling everything back this way. Obviously, that one is more invasive, it has much longer recovery time, and consequently, more risk. It's very important, if you're thinking about having a facelift, to consult a physician who understands all these different techniques, and can figure out which one is best for you.
