This simple yet powerful mountain gate is said to have been the model for Akira Kurosawa's masterpiece "Rashomon," which was highly praised overseas, including at the Venice International Film Festival, and its sequel "Beauty and the Thief." Seishozan Togo-ji Temple was originally the villa of Admiral Togo Heihachiro, famous for his role in the Battle of Tsushima during the Russo-Japanese War. After Togo's death, the temple was built here by people who admired the admiral. The building of the admiral's villa still remains today.
